I keep everything you talk to me about strictly confidential with the following exceptions:
In line with good practice and under the code of ethics of the BACP I receive regular supervision from an experienced supervisor with whom I discuss my cases. My supervisor in turn maintains the same level of confidentiality as I do.
Danger of harm
If I am concerned there is a danger of harm to yourself or someone else then my role changes and I might have to talk to an appropriate third party. Wherever possible I will discuss this with you in advance.
In online therapy clients need to ensure their own privacy both from interruption and online.
Approaches to therapy
Integrative Therapy
Integrative Therapy is a combined approach to psychotherapy that brings together different elements of specific therapies. Integrative therapists take the view that there is no single approach that can treat each client in all situations. Integrative psychotherapy is flexible and sensitive to the relationship between the client and the therapist.
A key advantage of integrative therapy is its flexibility and focus on the whole of an individual. The integration of different approaches means therapy can be tailored to meet a variety of needs and concerns, making it arguably a more flexible and inclusive approach to treatment than more traditional, singular forms of psychotherapy.
My approach combines theories from Systemic and Psychodynamic models of therapy.
Systemic Therapy
The aim of Systemic therapy is to gain insight into each family member’s role as it relates to the healthy functionality of the whole family. As a theory, it can be applied to organisations, couples, communities, or families. The therapy attempts to identify specific behaviour patterns and how each member responds to stressful situations within the family dynamic. By doing this, the individual participants can begin to understand and transform their patterns of behaviour to more adaptive, productive ones.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic theorists contend that the majority of psychological processes take place outside conscious awareness. Psychodynamic therapy focuses on these unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behaviour. The goal of psychodynamic therapy is to increase self-awareness and move from an unconscious to a more conscious way of behaving. In its brief form, a psychodynamic approach enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past relationships, particularly early ones.
Similarly trained and like-minded therapists
I am a member of a relationship therapy group where like minded and similarly trained therapists come together on a regular basis for peer supervision. Here are their profiles if my location isn’t right for you:
